EAO Provides Solutions-Based Approach for KOR Engineering

Delivers full custom HMIS design for harsh environments


SHELTON, Conn., Jan. 2018 – EAO, the expert partner for innovative, intuitive and reliable Human Machine Interface (HMI) solutions, provides KOR Engineering a full HMIS design solution rugged enough to withstand the harsh end user environments.

KOR Engineering is a full-service supplier of high performance Inspection Slitter Rewinders to the label printing industry. The company markets, develops, manufactures and installs these products from its 34,000 square-foot facility in Oakville, Canada.

“The company contacted EAO North America with a simple components order for a new control panel designed for labeling and packaging machinery,” said John Pannone, vice president sales, HMI Systems, EAO. “We quickly learned that the request was to fulfill an original need of individual controls for panels located in several operational areas within their equipment. They also wanted to modernize the end-product appearance and maintain the use of rugged controls.”

Pannone added that environment plays a critical role in the design process and the eventual implementation of EAO’s HMI systems and components. “Because KOR Engineering’s machines are used within the label printing industry, equipment often finds itself in aggressive environments that consist of exposure to harsh chemicals, oils and cleaning agents. We had to develop a solution that could withstand this type of environment.”

As a result, EAO’s team of designers and engineers suggested a “metal photo” finish process on the aluminum panel substrate that would be durable enough to withstand exposure to harsh conditions, but would also provide a clean, sophisticated look for the finished product. 

“Metal photo uses an etchant acid to create high quality images, graphics, or text on metal plates that can withstand severe abuse,” added Pannone. “KOR Engineering was hesitant at first since it wasn’t a familiar process, but was ecstatic with the final product.”

EAO also assisted KOR Engineering in establishing which components would be best suited for the operational setting. EAO presented its Series 04 product line which has an IP65 oil and water rating for maintaining maximum capability within rugged conditions. Additionally, each panel was also outfitted with a Series 84-certified e-stop to conform to strict ISO standards.

Rather than fill a simple c¬¬¬omponent request, EAO was able to navigate KOR Engineering throughout the entire process from concept to production. The EAO team understood the application environment and defined appropriate control technologies while catering to all of KOR Engineering’s specific production requirements. As a result, KOR Engineering’s system and production structure was modernized and improved, yielding an increase in productivity and savings.
