EAO Passenger Interface
Charge, Connect, Communicate
Passenger Interface, is an innovative new range of Qi certified inductive and USB phone chargers, featuring an integrated electronic iBeacon passenger location system. Passenger Interface is more than a phone charger, it has the potential to dramatically enhance the passengers’ journey experience, providing opportunistic charging, reducing ‘low battery anxiety’ and generating additional revenue for train operators.
Burgess Hill, April 2019. EAO Ltd has released details of its Passenger Interface a unique Qi certified inductive and USB charging system that helps passengers stay powered and connected throughout their journey, whilst allowing train operators to connect via the iBeacon through their travel app to gain passenger insight and offer value added services. EAO’s new Passenger Interface is available in three standard variants to meet the various needs of train operators, manufacturers and refurbishers:
- Seatback holster inductive charger, featuring an innovative metal holster with a secure soft-touch phone holder that provides visual access to up to 90% of the screen area.
- Rectangular multi-coil inductive charger with USB socket suitable for integration into seat backs.
- Round single coil inductive charger for mounting within a train table, with separate table edge USB socket functionality.
All three variants consume 5W of power from an input voltage 5V. Maximum output current (via USB A) is 1.0A and the maximum Inductive charging current is 1.0A
When a passenger uses Passenger Interface to wirelessly charge their phone, the iBeacon is activated and connects their phone to the Passenger Interface cloud using Bluetooth Low Energy. The iBeacon’s unique address will then identify the train operator API code, and also send back the train, carriage and position ID.*
Once the train operator API code is received the phone will search for and open an app containing the train operator API code. Passenger Interface has now established communication between the passenger's phone and the operator’s app.
Passengers using USB charging will need to simply touch their phones once onto the charger unit to activate the iBeacon and launch the app*.
This offers the potential for “smart ticketing” - where passengers are not required to present their ticket - but also opens opportunities to deliver the targeted value-added services such as tailored passenger information and customised trolley sales opportunities, driving customer loyalty and increasing operator revenue. iBeacon integration is subject to app development and cloud based service fees for the operator
Intensive use of phones by passengers means that mobile phones will often need recharging during journeys, but phone charger cables are easily forgotten and are frequently lost or broken. Modern phones can be wirelessly charged through the Qi compliant inductive charging system, but devices usually need to be very precisely positioned to ensure reliable recharging. Passenger Interface products incorporate a multi-coil charger that overcomes this placement issue, but also include a standard USB-A socket to cater for the requirements of older phone types. Passenger Interface has been specifically developed to meet rail industry standards and approvals and the long term reliability needed by train operators and passengers alike.
Visitors to Railtex can see Passenger Interface on the EAO Ltd stand K41 Hall 3 from 14th -16th May 2019
