Wireless - table mount integration.

Wireless - table mount integration

The Surface Mounted Charger (SMC) is an easy to mount housing assembly for mounting round wireless chargers into the top of a table. Train operators can cut a round hole in an existing table or design a new table to fit the chargers to the top of the table with the wires for the power supply to the bottom of the table.

The attractive low-profile design has a moulded charging symbol to clearly indicate it’s purpose. The assembly can be used to fit either EAO’s round EAO 10W wireless charger, or the higher power 15W charger which features the integrated magnetic locating ring to securely hold the phone in the optimal position for fast charging.

The SMC assembly is held securely in place, through a combination of high bond adhesive tape around the rim of the SMC and with the option of a mounting clamp screwed into the bottom of the table and fixed to the bottom of the charger.

The chargers themselves that are fitted into the SMC assembly have the option of an auxiliary USB wired output on the 10W version, or a charging status RGB LED indicator output for the 15W and magnetic locating ring versions.

EAO’s power supplies can provide the necessary input voltage. They can run from the train’s DC power or from an existing onboard AC supply and can be supplied with all the necessary cables. They are compact enough to fit into seats or train walls.

Advantages

  • Easy charger mounting from the top of a table

USB-C – charger sockets.

USB-C - charger sockets

The EU directive 2024 mandates that all new portable electronic devices must use USB-C sockets, including new Apple iPhones and iPads. EAO’s charging sockets utilise this USB-C global standard.

Modern laptops, tablets and portable devices use USB-C, due to its ability to automatically charge at a range of voltages from 5V to 20V and at higher powers up to 60 Watts when combined with a suitable power supply from EAO that supports the Power Delivery PD (3.0) standard or the Programmable Power Supply (PPS) standard.

Separation of power and charging reliability

Charging sockets for public transport are subject to frequent use and current USB-A sockets suffer from wear through incorrect insertion or overuse. Completely changing a traditional 230VAC socket due to a faulty USB-A socket is commonplace, costly and requires the isolation of the mains 230VAC power on the train.

Reliable and serviceable

USB-C charging sockets are unpolarised (can be inserted in either direction) and are less prone to wear through misuse. EAO’s sockets can be fitted separately from our power supplies, with low voltage at the socket, they designed for easy replacement as a maintenance part.

Advantages

  • Standard future proof USB-C connector
  • Reliable low wear connection
  • Supports phone and laptop charging*
  • Safe low voltage outlet
  • Serviceable – simple to replace
  • Range of standard and customisable housings

Replacing AC power sockets with USB-C

With EAO’s USB-C PD/PPS enabled sockets, passengers no longer need a plug-in power adaptor for their phone or laptop. All they need is their USB-C cable.

Faulty power adaptors carry the risk of loose covers and dangerous exposure to the main AC power and AC sockets can also be or overloaded by passengers using high power devices such bicycle battery chargers. So, train operators could replace them with USB-C sockets with PPS.

Standard and customised housings

EAO offers single or dual sockets in a 30.5mm mounting, or custom sockets are available.

USB-C - Power Delivery / PPS power supplies

EAO rail approved PD/PPS power supplies convert high voltage AC or DC train carriage power to the correct phone or laptop charging voltage for the USB-C sockets.

Using the Power Delivery (PD 3.0) protocol, the EAO USB Programmable Power Supply (PPS) negotiates with the phone, tablet or laptop the correct voltage between 5VDC and 20VDC and the optimal power level to efficiently and rapidly charge the device. Each of the twin outputs deliver up to 60W of power.

The AC input power supplies operate using any global mains voltage, whilst there are two DC versions with either 24VDC or 72-110VDC input.

Housed in a rugged IP40 enclosure for chassis mounting and with reliable screw terminal connections, the range is fully compliant with international railway standards including shock and vibration, EMC and fire protection.
